Your decision to follow Jesus is the most important decision you'll ever make.

It's the start of a new chapter in your life. If you live for Him, your life will begin to change.

What it means to follow Jesus

Living for Jesus isn't just about doing the right things and avoiding the wrong ones. It's not just about going to heaven instead of hell.

Those things are just part of the story.

Living for Jesus is really about developing a relationship with HIm. When you do that, your outward actions, desires, and priorities will start to reflect His.

The way to a relationship

The way—Jesus

God Loves you and has a plan for your life

He created people and wants to have a relationship with them—with you.

Unfortunately, everyone sins

Sin is when you choose to do things your way instead of following God's plan (hurting others, lying, stealing, etc.).

That sin causes separation from God

Your relationship with God is broken because of your sin.

God loves you despite your sin

He provided a way to restore your relationship with Him through His son Jesus.

Jesus willingly paid the price for your sin

He suffered and died on the cross.

Jesus was victorious over death

He rose from the dead, making a way to restore your broken relationship with God

Jesus is the way to a relationship with God

You can restore your relationship with God by admitting you've sinned, believing Jesus died and rose from the dead, and committing your life to Him. Salvation isn't something you earn—its's something you accept.

Getting to know Jesus

We make new friends and stay close to them through conversation and time spent together. Getting to know Jesus is like that too—you get to know Him through prayer and reading about Him and His teachings in the Bible.

The more time you spend with Jesus, the stronger your relationship with Him will be.

Prayer is simply having a conversation with Jesus. It requires both talking and listening. If prayer is new to you and you feel a little awkward, this guide can help you get started.

But remember that prayer isn't about a formula—you don't have to say certain things or pray in a certain order.
  1. Praise Jesus. Tell Him how much you love and want to know Him.
  2. Ask Him to forgive you. If there's sin in your life—if you're doing things that you know are wrong and want to change—ask for forgiveness and help.
  3. Ask Him for healing or help. If you're sick or facing a challenge, ask Him to intervene.
  4. Thank Him. Reflect on what you're thankful for and tell Him.

Read the Bible

The Bible contains the story of Jesus, His teachings, and more. If you want to know Him, read the Bible. From the creations of the world to what's coming next, this is where you'll find it.

If you're new to the Bible, here is a quick snapshot:
  • The Bible is a collection of 66 different books. It includes different types of writing—poetry, history, law, letters, etc.

  • The first 39 books—the Old Testament—are things that happened before Jesus was born.

  • The last 27 books—the New Testament—are things that happened after Jesus was born.

  • Books are separated into chapters and verses. John 3:16 | John = book, 3 = chapter, 16 = verse

It's not necessary to read the Bible front-to-back like you would another book. You can, but it's okay to skip around, too.

Now that you have a basic understanding of what the Bible is, it's time to start reading!

Now what?

You know about prayer and reading the Bible, but there are other things that can help you grow in your relationship with Jesus, too.

Getting baptized is a great way to celebrate your new life and share it with others in a public declaration of your decision to live for Jesus. It's an outward sign of an inner change.

Join a Beginnings Study

Getting started on this journey may be challenging or even confusing, and we know you probably have questions. That's why we've created the Beginnings study. Through five lessons, you'll explore what it means to have a relationship with Jesus:

  • What does it mean to follow Jesus?

  • Why do I need to build my life around Jesus?

  • Why is community important?

  • What am I supposed to do now?

You'll be matched with a Beginnings team member—someone who has been following Jesus for awhile—who will meet with you weekly to go over the study materials and discuss any other questions you might have.

Good to knows

What is the Trinity?

You've probably heard God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit used interchangeably.

There is only one God, but He exists in three persons: God the father, God the son (Jesus), and God the Holy Spirit. Each person is distinct yet fully God.

This is a hard concept to grasp, even for people who have been studying theology for a long time. As you grow in your relationship with God, you'll start to understand the Trinity a little better.

What is worship?

Worship is an expression of love and honor toward God. When most people use the word "worship," they're talking about singing songs to God during a church service, but worship is much broader than that.

Worship is an attitude you have as you approach your daily life.

It's about making sure your words and actions honor God and line up with His plan for your life. You can worship God through music, through your responsibilities, through your relationships, even through your work.

You are not alone
